The overall number of people working increased from 2016 to 2021.

While public transportation saw a decrease in ridership, the number of people working from home rose dramatically.

The number of remote workers saw the biggest increase of any category,  growing from around 500,000 to over 2.5 million - a 500% increase.

Their relative share of the workforce also grew from 4.7% to 21%.

In contrast, commuters reduced their use of the train, bus, and tram/light rail.

The biggest decrease was in train ridership, which fell from 770,765 commuters to 299,053.

The number of commuters who drove their car to work also dropped slightly, from about 6.6 million to approximately 6.4 million.

However, driving remained the dominant mode of transportation, accounting for 53.1% of the workforce in 2021, down from 62% in 2016.
